The tykes demonstrated on Saturday that we are a match for anyone in the division, after already registering victories against the teams in second and third place. We secured a draw against the runaway leaders at Oakwell, keeping the unbeaten run going, and it was a performance of great character from Barnsley fc, which will set up confidence for the rest of the season that we can take anyone, and this could prove to be the catalyst for a push into the play off zone.

We came from behind two times, the atmosphere was amazing, generated by a near full house at Oakwell.
In the end a point each was a fair result. But the reds proved a point in this game, coming back from the poor midweek performance against Scunny.

Kevin Nolan put the geordies in front with a composed finish after collecting Andy Carroll's flick on.

Jonas Gutierrez headed straight at Tykes keeper Luke Steele, before Emil Hallfredsson shot in off the bar from six yards to draw Barnsley level, demonstrating that he should have featured in midfield against Scunthorpe, he gets better and better for the reds, with positive intent every time he has the ball.

Carroll set up Marlon Harewood, whose looping shot put the Magpies ahead again, but once again Bobby Hassell got a late one as he headed Barnsley level in the 87th-minute.

Harewood's goal came with 12 minutes remaining and it looked like it could be another win for Newcastle, but the reds were in no mood to lie down, and we battled back for a point.

Hassell's goal summed up Barnsley's refusal to buckle, and it denied Newcastle an eighth straight victory.

Chris Hughton's team went into the match in excellent form and had not conceded a single goal in their previous four games.

But Mark Robins's team deserved their point and were particularly impressive after the break, winning three corners in quick succession before Hallfredsson struck.

Barnsley boss Mark Robins:

"We got off to the worst possible start where we conceded early on. You just hoped that we didn't get too damaged by that early goal.

"We got a point and it could have been better than that had we had a little bit more composure from Andy Gray.

"He was outstanding today, probably his best game since I came here."

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton:

"Andy Carroll coped very well. He didn't give us anything we don't already know. We know he's a handful and on his day a very good player."

"I think when you're 2-1, up with so little of the game to go, it's very disappointing when you don't get the result.

"What we didn't do well enough today in that last period was defend a set play, which we've been very good at doing."
