Watford 1 - Barnsley 0

Preview

The first game in charge for Mark Robins sadly ends in another defeat for Barnsley FC as Watford added more early season misery, none of the anticpated refreshed charge of players playing for their Oakwell futures. No more more points on the board... but plenty more frustration and pressure on all involved with the club. We need to quickly get a win under our belt, otherwise the season looks to be long, hard and joyless.

The new boss wasn't enough to inspire Barnsley in his first game in charge of the reds as we slip to a 1-0 defeat at Watford.

Having now gone six games without a win and remain rooted to the foot of the Championship table with just one point and one draw to look at.

Watford won it thanks to a strike from Danny Graham nine minutes into the second half.

Both sides lacked the killer attacking touch and the match was settled by a scrappy goal for the home side.

Ronins made a few changes to the side which lost to Reading and included Emil Hallfredsson, Bobby Hassell and O'Neil Thompson in the side.

We started nervously and Cleverley and Lansbury both had long-range efforts in the opening moments against Preece.

Hallfredsson had the best chance for the reds just before the break but his effort flew wide of the post as a poor first half drew to a close.
We started well after the break and came close to taking the lead through Kayode Odejayi but his header from six yards went over the bar.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce then made a good run into the Watford area and fired the ball across goal but it flashed wide as the Tykes in attacking mood.

As you might expect this season we went behind on 54 minutes when Don Cowie's free-kick was headed back across goal by Eustace and Graham bundled the ball over the line in a clumsy fashion.

Watford were nearly two up five minutes later when Graham then rounded the last defender but his effort was well saved by David Preece.

Lee Hodson then beat two men before unleashing a fierce drive at goal from 20 yards but his shot fizzed wide of the post as Barnsley looked to be struggling to keep up.

The reds chased an equaliser in the dying minutes and with nine minutes left Adam Hammill had a great effort from the edge of the area but sadly it curled just wide of the right-hand post.

This leaves as important a match as you get against Derby in midweek. Followed by Swansea at Oakwell on Saturday, Swansea themselves not having the best of starts to the campaign, the reds desperately need to register a wins in these next games or prospects will be looking very grim for club this season, two wins will quickly erase memories of the dreadful start.

Listen to Mark Robins comments.
